Hailing from the Southside of Atlanta, Nechie is the latest rapper to rise up from the underground and represent his hometown on the national stage. In recent years, the College Park native has landed features with artists like Gunna and Rich Homie Quan, and also appeared on Young Thug’s acclaimed Slime Language compilation. Growing up on Southern-rap legends like the Hot Boy$, Master P, and Three 6 Mafia, Nechie first started rapping as a kid, then fully dedicated himself to music after the death of a close friend in his mid-teens. “We were being bad kids, a gun went off, and he died in my hands,” says Nechie. “They tried to make it like I did it on purpose, and I ended up doing a year under house arrest.” Over the course of that year, Nechie worked on his music all day and night, partly to honor the memory of his friend. “I recorded myself every day, just rapped and rapped until I got better. I didn’t have anybody to talk to, so it was the only way to let my emotion out.”
